Associate Lawyer –
Family Litigation
Our firm is growing, and we are seeking a talented mid-level lawyer (+3 year-call) to join our family practice group.
This position will expose you to all aspects of family law, including:
- Divorce Proceedings
- Agreements, including cohabitation agreements, pre-nuptial agreements (marriage contracts) and separation agreements
- Child support
- Spousal/partner support
- Guardianship and parenting time
- Division of family/matrimonial property
- Paternity
- Adoption
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Conduct client consultations and provide summary legal advice;
- Represent clients in family law cases involving issues of divorce, parenting, support and the division of family property;
- Perform legal research of complex legal issues, analyze legal issues, and apply the law to to the facts;
- Negotiate settlements in alternative dispute resolution proceedings;
- Draft court pleadings and legal submissions; and
- Engage in litigation
A successful candidate must meet the following requirements and possess the following skills:
- Possess an LLB or JD, and be a member of good standing with the Law Society of Alberta;
- Have 3 – 4 years of experience with family law, and have a good understanding of the Rules of Court, Divorce Act, Family Property Act, Family Law Act, Matrimonial Property Act, Federal Child Support Guidelines, and Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines;
- Possess exceptional analytical, advocacy, and communication (verbal & written) skills;
- Have strong litigation experience and be able to engage in the alternative dispute resolution process, including mediation, arbitration and negotiation;
- Ability to deal with high-pressure and high-conflict situations, and deal with conflicting priorities and deadlines;
- Demonstrate a willingness and desire to dedicate the time required to learn and excel in this niche practice area;
- Demonstrate perseverance and resilience when faced with the demands of the position;
- Be a highly motivated team player;
- Possess excellent file and client management skills;
- Demonstrate ability to manage a very busy practice consisting of a wide variety of family law matters;
- Ability to stay abreast of frequent changes to legislation, regulations, and Rules of Court;
- Be self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented;
- Can excercise good judgment and discretion;
- Display professionalism, quality of service, and a a postitive attititude; and
- Be technologically proficient.
